UN Spanish Language Day (2026) celebration in Nairobi.
Celebration of the 2026 UN Spanish Language Day, promoting multilingualism and cultural diversity within the United Nations.
The United Nations in Kenya invites participants to celebrate the 2026 UN Spanish Language Day. The date, 23 April, commemorates the anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1616), one of the most influential figures in Spanish literature and author of Don Quixote, a foundational work of modern literature.
The date is also symbolically significant as it coincides with the death of William Shakespeare, which is why the United Nations observes both Spanish Language Day and English Language Day on the same date.
Spanish Language Day was formally established in 2010 as part of the UN initiative to promote multilingualism and cultural diversity across the organization.
